Chapter 12 - THE ASSAULT CASE

Delphine was charged based on what she actually did.
Assault.
Reckless endangerment of a pregnant person under the applicable statute.
Coercive conduct considered in sentencing.
No attempted murder.
No attempted fetal homicide.
No invented claim she tried to kill Iris.
She grabbed my hair.
Dragged me.
Caused a fall.
I was thirty-seven weeks pregnant.
That was serious enough.
The dining-room camera recorded most of it.
Sutton Hall had cameras in common areas because Lenora believed in security more than privacy.
Irony.
Video showed:
Plate knocked down.
Hair grabbed.
My fall.
My shout.
Delphine demanding custody.
Torin entering.
His failure to intervene.
The hospital bag thrown.
The marriage-ring moment.
The keys.
No editing.
No dramatic soundtrack.
Truth.
Delphine’s defense:
Family conflict.
She claimed she grabbed me because I was “storming away.”
Video disagreed.
She claimed the fall was accidental.
That part was partly true.
She did not push me directly to floor.
But she created the force.
The jury convicted her of assault and a pregnancy-related reckless-endangerment offense.
One more serious count requiring intent to cause major bodily injury ended in acquittal.
Correct.
She had been controlling.
Dangerous.
Not proven to have intended catastrophic injury.
At sentencing she said:
“I was trying to protect my family.”
The judge answered:
“You were trying to preserve authority over your family.”
Different.
Sentence:
Custodial term partly suspended due age and no prior criminal history.
Probation.
Anger-management intervention.
No direct contact with me.
No contact with Iris unless later approved through family court.
Permanent compliance with residence-trust boundaries.
No fiduciary role.
That final consequence came from trust proceedings, not criminal sentence.
Separate systems.
Good.
Outside court reporters asked:
“Did Delphine attack you because your baby inherited twenty-three percent?”
“No.”
“Does Iris own twenty-three percent?”
“No.”
“Then why?”
“She wanted to preserve temporary stewardship authority over protected family governance. That explains financial pressure. It does not explain away her personal choice to hurt me.”

Precision.
I had become very good at disappointing tabloids.
