Chapter 26 - THE FREEZER LEAVES

The chest freezer stayed in the garage for years.

Unplugged.

Evidence tag removed eventually.

I wanted to destroy it.

Elise said:

“Why are we letting an appliance become a shrine?”

Good question.

We sold it to a restaurant-equipment recycler.

Disclosed condition.

No drama.

The empty space became shelving.

Liora, home from college, saw it.

“Freezer gone?”

“Yes.”

“Finally.”

“Did it bother you?”

“Dad, it was ugly.”

I laughed.

She barely remembered the physical freezer now.

She remembered fear in fragments.

The pounding.

My jacket.

The camera.

Darlene’s face.

But her life had grown larger around the memory.

That was the goal.

Not forgetting.

Proportion.

That night she opened the garage freezer in our kitchen—smaller, ordinary—to get ice cream.

Closed it.

Walked away.

No pause.

No symbolism required.

Good.
