Chapter 25 - ELISE AND I STAY

Elise and I stayed married.

Not because staying proved strength.

Because we rebuilt something worth staying in.

Different bank authorizations.

Different legal counsel when necessary.

No shared-password mythology.

We read documents.

Every page.

Sometimes absurdly.

At a house refinancing, the loan officer joked:

“You two are thorough.”

Elise said:

“Family tradition.”

I almost choked.

We fought normally.

Vacations.

Work.

Whose turn to call the plumber.

No Darlene shadow.

No trust meeting disguised as dinner.

That was wealth.

Liora grew up seeing marriage as two people allowed to disagree without one of them becoming disposable.

I wish I had learned that before she was born.

Better late than inherited.
