Chapter 17 - DARLENE WITHOUT AUTHORITY

After custody and prison, Darlene returned to a smaller life.
Not poor.
She still owned lawful investments.
Whitestone interest.
A condo.
Retirement assets.
But no Sutton Heritage office.
No family trust authority.
No administrative passwords.
No ability to call an employee and say:
Handle it.
That loss hit her hardest.
Caroline visited her.
I did not.
Not yet.
Darlene wrote me.
Five pages.
First letter:
I did everything to protect what your father built.
I stopped reading.
Six months later:
I believed I understood Henry’s intentions better than the professionals he appointed.
Better.
Then:
I saw Liora as a child who had stumbled into adult information, and instead of protecting her from it, I treated her as a threat.
There.
I read the rest.
No request for contact.
Good.
Liora was seven.
She did not read it.
Not her burden.
At eight she asked:
“Grandma alive?”
“Yes.”
“Can she see me?”
“Not now.”
“Does she want?”
“I think so.”
“Do I want?”
“You decide when you’re older.”
She nodded.
May you like
Choice.
That was the thing Darlene had tried hardest to remove.
