Chapter 18 - THE CAMERA COMES DOWN

The garage camera remained evidence for years.
Appeals.
Retention.
Then finally released.
I had a copy.
I watched it once after the cases ended.
Elise sat beside me.
Darlene.
Liora.
The freezer.
My return.
My face.
The ice.
The blinking light.
I paused before my shove.
“I look insane.”
“You were.”
“Helpful.”
“You asked.”
Then the part where Darlene looked at the camera.
Fear.
I had built too much mythology around that moment.
The camera did not save us by itself.
It preserved facts.
Police still investigated.
Doctors documented.
Lawyers separated trust rights from ownership.
Auditors separated bad approvals from theft.
Courts separated coercion from homicide fantasies.
The camera was evidence.
Not justice.
I deleted my personal copy afterward.
The legal archive retained what it needed.
I did not want Liora’s worst afternoon stored beside vacation videos.
Then I took the camera down.
Not ceremonially.
Screwdriver.
Ten minutes.
The corner looked strangely empty.
Elise said:
“Going without surveillance?”
“Replacing it with a normal exterior system.”
“Healthy.”
“Try not to sound surprised.”
May you like
We laughed.
The garage became a garage again.
