Chapter 4 - THE HOUSE WAS A STAGE

Police photographed the kitchen before cleaning anything.

That sentence mattered because Evelyn had been mopping.

Why mop around two collapsed people?

Her lawyer said:

“She believed they had spilled juice and were refusing to get up.”

No.

The floor was not unusually dirty.

The mop bucket contained diluted cleaner.

Nothing toxic enough to explain symptoms.

So why clean?

One camera fragment supplied a clue.

Thursday evening.

Evelyn moved through the kitchen wiping surfaces.

She placed dirty plates in the sink.

Then positioned an empty snack wrapper near Clara’s hand while Clara slept on the couch.

Staging?

Maybe tidying badly.

The clip did not prove purpose.

Then she took a photograph.

That mattered.

Police recovered it from her phone.

Clara asleep.

Wrapper.

Empty wineglass on the table.

Clara had not been drinking.

The glass contained water and trace sedating antihistamine.

Why wineglass?

Mom liked wine.

She said it was hers.

Possible.

But caption draft in her notes:

Clara daytime drinking again.

Again?

Clara rarely drank.

She stopped almost entirely after Lily was born because alcohol triggered migraines.

There was no “again.”

Then another photograph:

locked pantry not visible.

Clara sitting on kitchen floor.

Caption:

Refuses to feed Lily unless family intervenes.

No.

The pantry had been locked by Evelyn.

The story was being written before anyone outside the house heard it.

Naomi explained:

“This may matter in several proceedings, but do not decide the legal theory yourself.”

“I’m trying not to.”

“You’re bad at it.”

Correct.

Child services established that Clara and Lily could live with me because there was no allegation I participated.

Still, they asked:

“Where will Evelyn be?”

“Not with us.”

“Daniel?”

“Not with us.”

“Do either have keys?”

“They did.”

We changed locks.

Security codes.

Household staff access.

Not fortress.

Boundaries.

Clara refused the house anyway.

“Hotel?”

“For now.”

I agreed.

Our home did not need immediate reclamation.

Ward Senior Living’s audit started.

Outside firm.

Servers preserved.

Daniel placed on administrative leave.

Mom suspended as board chair by emergency vote of independent directors.

She called me through counsel.

One message:

You are destroying your father’s company over Clara’s obsession.

I read it.

Did not reply.

Daniel sent:

You don’t know what she found because she doesn’t understand the business.

That sounded exactly like what I had told myself.

Dangerous.

I gave the outside auditors every credential I controlled.

They found Northline quickly.

Payments.

Approvals.

Daniel signed most.

One secondary approval:

Evelyn Ward.

Board chair did not normally approve vendors.

Why this one?

Emergency purchasing authority during pandemic protocols.

An old policy never revoked.

Daniel used it.

Evelyn co-signed.

Again:

systems left open because no one closed them after crisis.

The auditors would trace.

Not enough yet.

Then Clara remembered something.

“Your mother kept asking me where the ‘red file’ was.”

“What red file?”

“I didn’t have one.”

“Did Daniel?”

“I don’t know.”

“Why would she think you did?”

“Because I told him I printed the supporting invoices.”

“Where?”

“Your study.”

I searched with police permission.

Nothing.

Desk.

Cabinet.

Printer tray.

No stack.

Then Lily, sitting at the hotel coloring, heard us.

“Red?”

I turned.

“What?”

“Miss Button sat on red book.”

Clara looked at me.

“When?”

Lily shrugged.

“Grandma room.”

Mom’s guest room.

Police had already searched broadly for medications and communication devices, not every book.

They returned under expanded warrant.

Red hardcover ledger on top shelf.

Inside:

no invoices.

A handwritten list.

Facility names.

Amounts.

Initials.

Dates.

Total at bottom:

7,846,200.

Seven million eight hundred forty-six thousand two hundred.

No labels.

No explanation.

Beside the number:

D — 60%

E — 25%

Daniel.

Evelyn?

Maybe.

Not yet proof.

Close before Q4 audit.

Clara credibility must be resolved.
