Chapter 25 - HARBORCARE’S TWENTY-YEAR REPORT

HarborCare published a governance retrospective twenty years after the scandal.
I insisted names stay in the public record where legally appropriate.
Not euphemism:
historical vendor irregularities.
The report said:
Former CFO Daniel Ward and former board chair Evelyn Ward participated in fraudulent vendor schemes and subsequent obstruction.
And:
Company governance failures included excessive family concentration, emergency purchasing authorities left active beyond need, weak related-party review, and a culture of informal deference.
My failure too.
Not criminal.
Structural.
I wrote a short statement:
“I trusted familiarity where the company required verification.”
That became management-training material.
I retired from operations at fifty-four.
No dynasty.
Professional executives.
Employee ownership significant.
Lily owned no automatic control.
She received a diversified family trust later.
