Chapter 24 - EVELYN’S RELEASE

Evelyn left prison in her seventies.
No family-company role.
No access to vulnerable adults professionally.
She lived in a small apartment.
She asked whether Lily wanted contact.
Lily was twenty.
“No.”
I told counsel.
Evelyn answered:
Understood.
That one word showed more change than years of explanations.
At twenty-three, Lily changed her mind.
One mediated meeting.
Clara did not attend.
I did because Lily asked.
Evelyn looked old.
Lily looked like Clara.
First question:
“Why did you say Mommy was acting?”
Evelyn closed her eyes.
“Because if I admitted she was really sick, I would have had to admit I caused part of it.”
Good.
“Why me?”
“I wanted you quiet.”
Lily’s face changed.
Evelyn continued:
“That is the ugliest answer I have.”
No request to soften.
Lily asked:
“Did you love me?”
“Yes.”
“Then your love was unsafe.”
Evelyn cried.
“Yes.”
No hug.
No second meeting for three years.
Then occasional letters.
May you like
Relationship limited.
Chosen.
