Chapter 20 - EVELYN’S FIRST LETTER

Prison letters came through counsel.
First:
I hope someday you understand what I was trying to prevent.
I did not respond.
Second:
HarborCare would have collapsed if the fraud came out during sale.
False.
It survived.
Third:
I am beginning to understand that I keep describing harm as prevention.
Better.
Then:
I told myself Clara’s accusation would destroy Daniel, and because I believed Daniel was fragile, I decided Clara had to become less credible.
There.
Then Lily.
I stopped reading for one day.
Continued.
I gave Lily medicine because I wanted quiet. There is no explanation that changes what that means.
Good.
She asked for no visit.
No photograph.
No forgiveness.
I sent one response:
