Chapter 24 - ETHAN AND HARPER

At twenty-two, Harper asked Ethan the question she had saved.

“Why did you let Grandma come toward me with the collar?”

They were alone except for a therapist available outside.

Ethan answered later in a letter Harper showed me.

Because I was more afraid of opposing my mother than of what the moment would do to you and your mother.

Then:

I told myself you were too young to understand, so the harm did not count.

Then:

I cared more about the transaction than the kind of father I was becoming.

Harper asked:

“Did you love Mom?”

“Yes.”

“Then why?”

Ethan said:

“I treated love as something I could keep while betraying her in every practical way.”

That was one of the best sentences he ever said.

I hated that I respected it.

Harper’s relationship with him grew.

Not into childhood restoration.

They could not recover years.

They built adulthood.

Lunch.

Calls.

Eventually holidays.

Ethan never returned to Vance governance.

His fiduciary restrictions expired partially, but independent boards did not rehire him.

He worked in commercial-property consulting.

Smaller life.

Maybe healthier.

He remarried at fifty-one.

Harper attended.

I did not need to.
