Chapter 22 - HARPER SEES THE VIDEO

Harper was sixteen when she asked again.

This time, we showed her.

Not online clips.

The full evidence copy.

Therapist present.

Ethan knew beforehand.

He did not attend.

Video.

Me opening the box.

Metal chain.

Victoria laughing.

“How wonderfully fitting for a creature like it.”

Harper’s face went still.

Me:

“Do not put that near my daughter.”

Ethan:

“Just let it go.”

Then the camera.

My threat.

Harper paused.

“You said you’d put it around her neck.”

“Yes.”

“Would you?”

“No.”

“Were you serious?”

“I was serious that I wanted her afraid. I was not going to physically do it.”

Harper stared.

“That was bad.”

“Yes.”

“Her gift was worse.”

“I’m not ranking it for you.”

She looked at me.

“Why?”

“Because if I use someone else’s cruelty to excuse mine, I teach you the wrong thing.”

She replayed Ethan’s line.

Perfectly fine gift.

Then stopped.

“He knew?”

“Yes.”

“That’s worse than prison.”

I understood what she meant.

Not legal severity.

Betrayal.

She finished.

At the final frame, the floral camera blinked.

Harper whispered:

“They wanted you to say it.”

“Yes.”

She cried.

Then asked to see Victoria’s letter.

I gave it.

Not every legal file.

The honest letter.

Harper read:

The collar was not about Harper.

She looked up.

“It was still about me.”

“Yes.”

“Adults are stupid.”

May you like

“Yes.”

That truth survives generations.
