Chapter 23 - VICTORIA’S LAST MEETING

Harper chose to meet Victoria at nineteen.
Public room.
Therapist available but not seated with them.
I did not attend.
Ethan waited elsewhere because Harper asked him.
Victoria was eighty by then.
Pearls.
Still.
Harper later told me the conversation.
“Why did you call me a creature?”
Victoria answered:
“I wanted to wound your mother.”
“Why use me?”
“Because I knew you were the part of her she would protect without hesitation.”
“Did you hate me?”
“No.”
“That doesn’t help.”
“I know.”
Harper asked about the trust.
Victoria explained badly at first.
Legacy.
Family stewardship.
Harper interrupted.
“Did you think the money belonged to you?”
Victoria said:
“Yes.”
Not legally.
Emotionally.
That answer helped more.
Then Harper asked:
“Do you still think Mom came from below?”
Victoria took a long time.
“No.”
“Because she got rich?”
“No.”
“Then why?”
“Because I learned there was no below.”
Harper did not forgive her.
She agreed to one more meeting two years later.
Victoria died before a third.
Stroke.
Harper attended the funeral.
I did too.
Not for Victoria.
For Harper.
Ethan gave the eulogy.
He spoke about his mother’s intelligence.
Her control.
Her philanthropy.
Her failures.
No sainthood.
No public confession spectacle.
Afterward, Harper asked where the red collar was.
I did not know.
North Coast checked.
Evidence retention had ended years earlier.
Victoria’s attorneys declined return.
Police destroyed it under policy.
Harper smiled.
“Good.”
No museum.
May you like
No inheritance.
Leather and metal gone.
