Chapter 21 - VICTORIA’S LETTER

Victoria wrote Harper before Harper could read.
Rejected.
Then wrote me.
The first letter:
Everything I did was for the Vance family.
I returned it.
Second:
You used Harper’s trust against us.
Returned.
Third, years later:
I used Harper’s existence against you before you ever used the trust.
I opened that one.
Victoria wrote:
The collar was not about Harper. That may be the ugliest truth. I knew a one-month-old could not understand the insult. I wanted you to understand it.
Then:
I wanted to remind you that you entered our family from below.
Class.
Finally named.
Then:
When Charles’s trust made you independent protector, I experienced it as the family elevating you over me.
There.
Not money alone.
Status.
“I thought if I made you lose control publicly, everyone would see what I believed about you privately.”
I kept reading.
“I did not expect Ethan to lose his wife. I expected him to regain authority.”
That sentence made me laugh bitterly.
Same thing.
Then:
“I am sorry I made Harper an object in a punishment intended for her mother.”
I stored the letter.
Harper was twelve when she asked about Victoria.
“Why didn’t I see Grandma?”
Because by then Victoria was on supervised release, old, and living in a condominium after custody.
I gave the broad truth.
“She helped create a situation to make me look unsafe when you were a baby.”
“Did she hurt me?”
“Not physically.”
“What situation?”
“Something cruel at a family party.”
“Can I know?”
“When you’re older, yes.”
She hated waiting.
May you like
Good.
Some truths need timing.
