Chapter 9 - THE FIRST DATE

The email contained no romantic language.

Charles wrote:

Claire Bennett is the remaining interested party in the Margaret Bennett matter. Direct legal contact may trigger review. Personal engagement creates a safer channel.

Adrian replied:

I saw her conference profile. I can handle it.

Our first meeting had not been chance.

He attended a compliance conference outside his usual field because his father sent him.

I remembered his questions.

Whether I had siblings.

Whether Margaret left papers.

Whether I planned to return to my hometown.

I had interpreted attention as care.

The email made every early conversation feel contaminated.

Adrian’s lawyer argued “contact strategy” meant resolving dormant estate questions before marriage.

The timing said otherwise.

Maya’s files included hotel reservations, background reports, and photographs of me taken before Adrian introduced himself.

He had studied me.

Then something complicated the betrayal.

Three years into our marriage, Adrian sent Charles an email:

I will not ask Claire to waive the Bennett claim. She knows nothing and should remain outside this.

Charles answered:

You were not asked to develop principles.

Adrian replied:

I was asked to marry her. I did. That does not make her disposable.

He had begun with a plan.

At some point, he resisted part of it.

Then he struck me with a plate when I found the money.

Love and exploitation had existed in the same marriage.

One did not erase the other.

The FBI verified Bennett Advisory’s bank account.

It was opened using my identity.

Security footage showed a woman resembling me only from a distance.

The face was hidden by a medical mask and large glasses.

Eleanor’s personal assistant completed the account paperwork.

The assistant, Janice Ford, claimed Eleanor told her I had authorized it.

Janice received no money beyond salary.

She agreed to cooperate after seeing the forged signature.

Adrian had approved several transfers from the shell company.

He said his father described them as estate reimbursements owed to the Caldwells.

Daniel Reed asked:

“Did you know Bennett Advisory belonged to your wife on paper?”

Adrian stared at the interview table.

“Yes.”

“Did she know?”

“No.”

“Why approve the transfers?”

“My father said the account would remain dormant unless the old guardianship cases reopened.”

The account was not merely laundering money.

It was insurance.

If investigators found the transfers, the records pointed toward me.

The family had married me, used my identity, and built me into the escape route.

Then Simon opened a folder titled DINNER.

Inside was a seating chart for the night Adrian struck me.

Every relative had been assigned a place.

Beside twenty names was one instruction:

If Claire raises Bennett, no one saw the first movement.
