Chapter 11 - THE HOUSE BY THE AIRFIELD
The abandoned Caldwell vehicle contained traces of Maya’s perfume and a strip of medical tape with her DNA.
She had been inside.
Traffic cameras placed the vehicle near a farmhouse owned by an Eleanor-controlled charity.
Agents entered under warrant.
The house was empty.
A bed had recently been used. Sedative packaging lay in the trash. A camera faced the bedroom from behind a vent.
The family had recorded Maya while keeping her there.
On the wall, someone had written four numbers in eyeliner:
4 — 7 — 12 — 19.
Daniel Reed believed they referenced names on the PEARL3 list.
Entries four, seven, twelve, and nineteen shared one feature.
Each resident died within ten days of signing revised estate documents.
Again, proximity did not prove murder.
Medical records showed serious illness in every case.
But the same physician certified incapacity.
Dr. Victor Lane.
Lane had served as medical director across Caldwell facilities for seventeen years.
He refused an interview.
The FBI subpoenaed his accounts.
Payments from Silver Crest exceeded his disclosed income by $1.2 million.
He called them consulting fees.
Maya remained missing.
Then Adrian requested a protected interview.
He admitted the family used guardianships to acquire property below market value. He claimed he believed every court order was lawful.
“What did Maya discover?” Daniel asked.
“A death review.”
“What kind?”
“She thought medication changes were timed around estate signatures.”
“Did you believe her?”
“I told her she was becoming paranoid.”
“Why?”
Adrian looked toward his attorney.
“Because believing her meant my entire life was funded by abuse.”
He described an internal committee called Transition Review.
Charles handled legal strategy.
Eleanor selected residents described as “without effective family opposition.”
Dr. Lane provided competency evaluations.
Maya coordinated family contact and initially believed the committee prevented abandoned residents from dying without plans.
Then she found altered medication logs.
Adrian claimed he had never attended Transition Review.
Maya’s files listed him on two calendar invitations.
He said he declined both.
Server records would determine that.
Before ending, he gave us a location.
An old Caldwell hospice building closed for renovation.
Eleanor sometimes used its underground records room.
Agents entered that night.
They found Maya behind a locked fire door, conscious but heavily sedated.
She was alive.
