Chapter 1 - THE PORCELAIN PLATE

The heavy porcelain plate struck my temple before I understood Adrian had picked it up.
Pain flashed white behind my eyes.
The plate shattered against my head. Food, sauce, and fragments scattered across the formal dining table as I collapsed against its edge. My hip hit the floor. One heel twisted beneath me.
“You’re humiliating me in front of my entire family!”
Adrian’s voice shook the room.
Twenty relatives sat around the table.
Every one of them recoiled.
None stood.
Warm blood slipped through my hair and traced my cheek. I gripped the tablecloth and forced myself upward far enough to see my husband.
His chest rose and fell beneath his tailored suit. His wedding ring remained on the hand curled into a fist.
Eleanor turned her face away.
Charles lowered his eyes toward his untouched dinner.
Maya stared at me from the opposite side of the table, both hands pressed against her mouth.
I pulled a curved porcelain shard from my hair and placed it on the table.
Adrian stepped toward me.
“This is what you do, Claire. You provoke people, then act like a victim.”
I reached for my phone.
His expression changed.
I wiped blood from my cheek and raised the screen between us.
“You have no idea who you just made an enemy of.”
Eleanor lunged from her chair.
“Stop! You’re making it sound worse than it was!”
I held the phone beyond her reach and called emergency services.
Adrian froze.
Not because I had called.
Because a calm dispatcher’s voice immediately answered from the speaker.
Maya moved before anyone else.
She stepped between Adrian and me, trembling so hard her earrings shook.
“Do not come any closer to her.”
Adrian stared at his sister.
“You need to sit down.”
“No.”
Charles rose and glanced toward the doorway.
A tiny green security-camera light blinked above the frame.
Police pounded against the front entrance.
Charles reached for the wall panel controlling the estate’s cameras.
Maya caught my bleeding hand as though helping me stand.
Something hard pressed into my palm.
A black flash drive.
Her fingers closed mine around it.
“Don’t let them know you have this,” she whispered.
The front doors opened.
Uniformed officers entered with their hands near their belts. Adrian raised both palms and began explaining that I had suffered “an unfortunate accident during an argument.”
Maya released my hand.
Then she stepped away from me and said loudly, “I didn’t see how the plate broke.”
I stared at her.
A moment earlier, she had protected me.
Now she was already changing the story.

As an officer approached, Charles entered a code on the security panel.
The green light above the doorway went dark.
