Chapter 10 - THE FAMILY SCRIPT

The dinner had been staged around my silence before I entered the room.

Charles knew I had found Bennett Advisory because Adrian forwarded a screenshot from our home computer.

Eleanor invited twenty relatives who depended on the family through jobs, loans, trusts, or housing.

Maya’s files included a voice recording made before dinner.

Charles said:

“If Claire becomes emotional, Adrian defends himself.”

Eleanor replied:

“She will call the police.”

Charles answered:

“Then twenty people remember confusion.”

Adrian’s voice came last.

“No one touches her.”

Charles said:

“Then keep control of your wife.”

The recording did not prove Adrian planned the plate attack.

It proved he knew the family intended to manipulate witnesses.

Maya had recorded the conversation.

Why had she remained at the table?

Because she was collecting more.

Her clinic video continued to show denial, but the PEARL3 files contained a hidden text document:

If I disappear into Mother’s clinic, assume consent is manufactured.

Maya had anticipated confinement.

Daniel Reed sought a warrant for the clinic based on potential witness tampering and medical fraud.

The clinic fought.

A judge authorized seizure of Maya’s admission records and direct evaluation by an independent physician.

Maya had signed voluntary admission forms.

The signature appeared genuine.

Toxicology records showed she received heavy sedatives within an hour of arrival, despite no documented danger to herself or others.

She could technically request discharge.

Every request form was marked withdrawn.

The handwriting on the withdrawals did not match hers.

Before agents reached the facility, Maya vanished.

Clinic cameras showed Eleanor entering through a private door.

Ninety minutes later, a vehicle left with rear curtains closed.

Eleanor denied Maya was inside.

The vehicle belonged to Caldwell Legacy Partners.

Police found it abandoned near a private airfield.

No flight plan identified Maya.

The dinner case moved forward.

The prosecutor offered Adrian no misdemeanor reduction.

The plate had been heavy, the injury required stitches, and his texts supported intent.

His attorney requested a competency evaluation, suggesting stress caused a brief break from reality.

Adrian rejected the strategy.

In court he looked at me and said:

“I knew exactly what I was doing.”

His lawyer grabbed his sleeve.

Adrian continued.

“I wanted her to stop.”

The admission ended one argument and opened another.

Did he mean stop speaking?

Stop investigating?

Stop destroying the family?

The judge revoked his release after finding his statement and parking-lot appearance showed continuing risk.

As deputies led him away, Adrian spoke over his shoulder.

“Find Maya before my mother does.”

For the first time since the plate shattered, he sounded afraid for someone other than himself.
