Chapter 16 - THE PRIVATE DOCK
The private dock belonged to Eleanor’s lakeside property.
Security records from the night Stephen died were missing.
A neighboring home’s old cloud archive still contained three frames captured by a motion camera.
Stephen’s boat approached at 8:14 p.m.
A second boat followed.
At 8:22, both moved beyond the camera angle.
At 9:03, the second boat returned alone.
The image quality did not identify passengers.
Weather records placed the strongest storm later than Charles had claimed.
Stephen did not fall during the initial squall because it had not reached the dock yet.
Charles’s attorney argued he could have left again and encountered weather elsewhere.
Navigation data ended near the private dock after the beacon was disabled.
The evidence suggested intervention.
It did not yet prove who caused Stephen to enter the water.
Divers searched beneath the dock.
They recovered a corroded metal clip bearing fibers matching Stephen’s life jacket.
The clip had been forced open.
A marine expert said it could break during struggle or accident.
Maya’s files contained one audio note Stephen recorded that evening.
He spoke quietly:
“Charles offered to buy the archive. Eleanor says Maya will lose everything if I expose them. Adrian is here, but he won’t look at me.”
The recording ended with a door opening.
Adrian had been at the dock.
He had denied it.
Confronted, he changed his account.
He said Charles asked him to attend a family intervention. Stephen became angry and boarded his boat again.
“Did anyone follow?”
“My father and Gage.”
“On which boat?”
“The company launch.”
“Why lie?”
“Because I knew how it looked.”
Daniel’s reply was immediate.
“It looked worse because you lied.”
Adrian claimed he left before the launch returned.
Phone data placed him at the property until after ten.
He had not told the full truth yet.
The government did not rush a murder charge.
Instead, prosecutors used the growing obstruction evidence to seek continued detention and pressure cooperation.
Charles and Eleanor were arrested on fraud, conspiracy, identity theft, guardianship exploitation, medical-record falsification, and witness-tampering charges.
Charles also faced obstruction related to Stephen’s death investigation.
Eleanor faced unlawful confinement charges for Maya’s clinic and farmhouse detention.
Dr. Lane surrendered.
Martin Gage remained free under cooperation conditions.
At arraignment, Eleanor looked at Maya.
“You were ill.”
“You made me ill enough to say that.”
Eleanor’s expression hardened.
“You would have destroyed everyone.”
Maya answered quietly.
“No. I stopped helping you destroy strangers.”
That evening an unknown sender delivered a video to Rachel.
It showed Stephen standing on the private dock.
Charles confronted him.
Adrian stood several feet away.
Eleanor held Maya’s phone.
Then Gage stepped between Stephen and his boat.
The clip ended before violence began.
A time stamp showed it came from a camera everyone believed had been deleted.
