Chapter 7 - THE FALSE TRAIL

The malware was sophisticated enough to alter file timestamps and create folders carrying my username.
Simon had isolated the drive before it could execute.
The attacker’s plan was clear in outline:
Give me real evidence mixed with malicious code.
Let me open it improperly.
Then claim I created or altered everything.
Was Maya protecting me or delivering the trap?
Both could be true if someone forced her.
Federal investigators joined the state case after bank records confirmed money moved across multiple states through resident estates and shell companies.
Special Agent Daniel Reed led the financial team.
He did not treat the flash drive as clean evidence.
“We use it as a map,” he said. “We obtain the roads independently.”
Subpoenas went to banks, courts, care facilities, and property registries.
The first verified case matched Margaret’s files.
Silver Crest obtained guardianship.
Eleanor’s company bought the house below market value.
Charles’s law firm collected fees.
Caldwell Gardens billed care services.
Adrian was twenty-six then and worked in company finance.
His signature appeared on one closing summary.
He claimed he signed hundreds of reports without reviewing individual estates.
A familiar defense.
Authority without attention.
Daniel Reed asked how Adrian and I met.
“At a professional conference.”
“Who approached whom?”
“He did.”
“Did he know your connection to Margaret Bennett?”
“I told him on our third date.”
Adrian had said his family’s company acquired Caldwell Gardens years after Margaret died.
That was false.
The Caldwell family controlled it through a holding company at the time.
He knew before marrying me that his family had managed my aunt’s estate.
Whether he knew the fraud required more evidence.
The private clinic finally allowed Maya to speak with police.
She appeared on video wearing pale clothes, no makeup, and an expression emptied of urgency.
“I entered treatment voluntarily,” she said.
“Did you give Claire a flash drive?” Morales asked.
“No.”
“Did you see Adrian strike her?”
“I saw Claire fall.”
“Are you afraid of your family?”
“No.”
The answers sounded rehearsed.
Then Maya touched her pearl earring three times.
At dinner she had used the same gesture after giving me the drive.
Simon examined the drive again.
One encrypted folder was named PEARL3.
The password hint read:
WHAT MOTHER CALLS MERCY.
Eleanor frequently used one phrase about vulnerable residents.
A dignified transition.
The password worked.
Inside was a list of forty-seven names.
Beside each:
Property value.
Living relatives.
Guardianship status.

My aunt Margaret was number three.
