Chapter 8 - THE MAN IN THE WINDOW

Martin Hale denied visiting my mother that night.

His vehicle’s location history placed him within two blocks of her house for fifty-three minutes.

He claimed he had attended a nearby restaurant.

The restaurant had no reservation under his name.

Carly’s phone contained a deleted calendar entry:

M.H. — final rehearsal.

Sara read the words twice.

“This was not only planning. They practiced.”

The news reached the probate judge before Hale could seek another extension. He was removed as temporary estate counsel and ordered to preserve every relevant device and file.

An independent fiduciary, Laurel Chen, took temporary control of the trust.

That protected the building.

It did not immediately restore my access.

Carly retaliated by publishing a longer edited video of me confronting our mother. The clip removed the traps from view and kept only my promise to destroy whoever was responsible.

Ethan’s classmates heard about it from their parents.

One boy called him “rat boy” during recess.

I withdrew Ethan from school for a week after he refused to enter the building.

It was the right decision for his immediate safety and a painful consequence of the public fight.

Carly then offered to meet.

Sara insisted the conversation take place in her office with both lawyers present.

Carly arrived without my mother.

Her confidence had cracked.

“Mom said it would barely pinch him,” she said.

My hands tightened beneath the table.

“You placed two loaded traps under a cut insole.”

“I didn’t know he’d force his whole foot in.”

“You told him to.”

She looked away.

“Who designed the recording?”

“Hale.”

“Who bought the traps?”

“Mom.”

“Who cut the shoe?”

Carly’s eyes filled.

I felt no sympathy.

“You did.”

She nodded.

Then she offered a deal.

I would ask prosecutors for leniency and stop challenging the property sale.

In return, she would admit the prank was her idea and claim our mother knew nothing.

“You want me to protect the woman who called my child an accident while he screamed?”

“She’s our mother.”

“No. She’s the person who gave you the traps.”

Carly stood to leave.

At the door, she turned.

“You think the building is the only reason she did this?”

I said nothing.

“She wanted you removed before the bank found the second account.”

Until that moment, I knew about the fraudulent sale.

I did not know there was another account.
