Chapter 4 - MY NAME ON THEIR SALE

Sara sent the sale authorization to a forensic document examiner.

The signature resembled mine because it had been copied from an authentic trust document. Tiny breaks in the ink pattern suggested it had been printed rather than written directly.

That was useful.

It was not yet enough to prove who created it.

The notary block belonged to Paula Wynn, a woman who handled routine estate documents for Martin Hale’s office. She claimed I had signed through a remote appointment.

The recording of that appointment was unavailable due to a “server migration.”

Every missing record benefited the same people.

I made my first major mistake that afternoon.

Against Sara’s advice, I logged into my mother’s camera account to look for backups.

For eleven seconds, I saw a thumbnail from before Ethan’s injury.

Carly was kneeling beside his sneaker with something wooden in her hand.

I clicked download.

The account locked.

The thumbnail vanished.

An hour later, my mother’s lawyer accused me of unauthorized access and evidence manipulation.

The deleted-camera audit now showed activity from two devices:

My home laptop.

And the old tablet still inside my mother’s house.

My own login had been used to erase the video before I ever opened the account.

But my attempt to retrieve it gave them a believable way to claim I had tampered with the system myself.

At the emergency hearing, the judge refused to remove me permanently as trustee. She did, however, order me not to enter my mother’s home or the hardware building until the evidence dispute was resolved.

Martin Hale remained estate counsel.

The proposed sale remained pending.

Outside court, he approached me with a sympathetic expression.

“Emily, this can still be settled privately.”

“You filed a petition built around a video recorded after my son was injured.”

“I represent the trust, not your emotions.”

“My father trusted you.”

“He trusted me to protect the property.”

He walked away before I could answer.

Sara touched my arm.

“Do not confront him again.”

Then she showed me the newly filed closing certificate.

It stated that if I remained legally unavailable, Martin Hale could sign the sale documents as temporary fiduciary.

The trap beneath Ethan’s foot had been designed to remove me for exactly long enough to close the sale.
