Chapter 5 - FORTY-TWO MINUTES EARLY
A child-protection investigator named Dana Ellis visited my apartment the next morning.
Someone had reported that Ethan was repeatedly injured because I staged dangerous incidents for attention and financial advantage.
I wanted to scream.
Instead, I answered every question.
Dana examined the hospital discharge papers, photographed Ethan’s bruised toes with my permission, and interviewed him separately in the living room while I waited in the kitchen.
When they finished, Ethan climbed into my lap.
“Aunt Carly told me to put the shoes on for her video,” he said.
Dana crouched near him. “Did she tell you anything else?”
“She said don’t take my socks off.”
“Did Grandma know?”
Ethan looked toward me before answering.
“Grandma put the shoes on the chair.”
I closed my eyes briefly.
My mother had touched them.
Dana remained careful. “Did you see her put anything inside?”
“No.”
That distinction mattered.
Later, Dana told me the report against me had been submitted at 9:18 a.m.
The traps snapped at 10:00.
The complaint described an injury that had not yet happened.
She could not immediately disclose the reporter’s identity, but she could preserve the timestamp and refer the false-report issue to police.
The pre-filed petition and pre-filed child-welfare complaint now pointed to planning.
My mother responded by giving a local news blogger Carly’s edited video.
The headline called me a “violent trustee in a family estate war.”
Parker Hardware’s three senior employees voted to place me on administrative leave until the court clarified who controlled the building.
I lost access to my office, payroll files, and my father’s paper records.
That evening Ethan asked whether he had made me lose my job.
“No.”
“But the shoes—”
“You did nothing wrong.”
He studied my face.
“Grandma said you’d yell when the camera saw me cry.”
