Chapter 10 - THE TABLET IN THE STORAGE UNIT

Carly finally admitted where the tablet was.
My mother had placed it inside a rented storage unit the afternoon police first asked about it.
The unit was registered to Parker Digital Lifestyle LLC.
Investigators obtained a warrant.
Inside they found my tablet, trust account statements, blank notary forms, two discarded versions of the emergency petition, and the original cut section of Ethan’s sneaker insole.
The tablet still held my saved passwords.
Its location history placed it inside my mother’s kitchen when the camera footage was deleted and the false messages were sent.
Forensic analysis showed Carly had created the messages by logging into my account, sending them to herself, and deleting the outgoing copies.
My mother’s fingerprints were found on the tablet case.
That did not prove she typed the messages.
The recovered audio and account records did more.
The camera manufacturer also preserved diagnostic logs showing the living-room camera remained active throughout the incident. My mother had deleted the visible clip, but a low-resolution maintenance buffer survived on the company’s server.
It showed Carly placing the rigged sneaker on the floor.
It showed my mother positioning Ethan’s other shoe beside it so he would choose the trapped one.
It showed Martin Hale leaving through the kitchen door nine minutes before I arrived.
The footage had no clear audio.
Carly’s phone supplied that.
Together, the evidence formed a chain.
The probate judge voided the sale authorization and continued independent management of the trust.
The buyer withdrew from closing but preserved a claim for expenses. Laurel Chen began auditing every account.
I should have felt safe.
Instead, Carly asked to speak with prosecutors.
She was prepared to testify against our mother and Hale.
Before giving her statement, she told Sara one more thing.
“The traps were Plan B.”
“What was Plan A?” I asked.
Carly looked at Ethan’s photograph on Sara’s desk.
“To put Grandma’s prescription pills in your car and call child protection while Ethan was with you.”

The shoes had not been their first idea.
They had prepared more than one way to take my credibility—and possibly my son.
