Chapter 25 - SAMUEL’S RETIREMENT DINNER

Samuel’s retirement dinner happened at a hotel ballroom.
I almost declined.
Ballrooms still did something to my nervous system.
Then went.
Madison attended separately.
Evelyn too.
No one arranged seating without asking.
I wore low heels.
My foot tolerated them.
Samuel noticed.
“Showing off?”
“Yes.”
During speeches, one resident doctor thanked him for teaching:
Do not move a patient because the room is uncomfortable.
I knew where that came from.
Samuel had turned one moment into medical principle without naming me.
After dinner, I stood.
No numbness.
No panic.
Just fatigue.
Madison came over.
“There are chairs right here.”
I stared at her.
Her face went white.
Then she realized what she had said.
“Oh my God.”
For one second, silence.
Then I laughed.
Not because the original joke became okay.
Because the phrase no longer belonged entirely to that night.
Madison started laughing too.
Samuel looked confused.
Evelyn did not.
She cried quietly.
