Chapter 22 - EVELYN AFTER PRISON

Evelyn came home in her late sixties.

No Mercer office.

No board.

No family proxy.

She lived in a condominium overlooking the river.

Comfortable.

Not the Mercer estate.

The estate itself had been sold years earlier because none of us wanted it and the trust did not need a monument.

Proceeds diversified.

Evelyn requested family dinners.

No.

Then lunches.

Sometimes.

Boundaries became specific.

No corporate discussion with me.

No medical questions.

No “concern” language about my gait.

The first time she asked:

“Does your foot hurt?”

I froze.

She saw it.

“I mean as your mother, not for a file.”

That sentence hurt.

“Sometimes.”

She nodded.

No follow-up.

Progress can be one question stopping where it should.
