Chapter 23 - THE CAMERA FOOTAGE

I watched the full wedding footage only once after trial.

Years later.

Madison asked if I ever had.

“No.”

She had.

Court required it.

I decided to watch with Lena.

The video showed me walking toward the chair.

Confident.

Annoyed.

Heels clicking.

Madison’s hand.

Pull.

Fall.

Laughter.

My face changing when my foot failed.

Evelyn’s contempt.

Samuel arriving.

Then:

Check the recording.

I paused.

“I sounded calmer than I felt.”

“You were in shock,” Lena said.

People online had called the line iconic after footage leaked during the trial.

I hated that.

Strength was partly dissociation.

Pain.

Fear.

I did not want young women learning credibility requires icy composure.

I could have screamed.

Cried.

Sworn.

None would make the chair less intentional.

I authorized no documentaries.

No anniversary interview.

The footage remained evidence.

Not brand material.

Madison later told me:

“The worst part is hearing myself laugh.”

Not the conviction.

Not prison.

The laugh.

Good.

Some consequences belong inside memory.
