Mercer Holdings still needed money.
That fact did not disappear because Grant’s deal was contaminated.
The independent board evaluated three options.
Sell the warehouse portfolio.
Issue debt at higher rates.
Bring in a minority institutional investor with no conversion to control.
None perfect.
The warehouse sale produced the cleanest balance sheet.
Evelyn hated it.
She had built the warehouse division with Dad.
Emotionally true.
Financially, it was now non-core.
I did not vote immediately.
I asked employees.
Managers.
Trustees.
Lenders.
Then approved a partial sale, not the whole portfolio.
Cash reduced debt.
Existing lenders extended maturities.
No Hollis Capital.
No three board seats.
Mercer remained family-trust controlled, but governance became more independent.
Grant lost millions in expected fees.
He blamed me publicly through anonymous leaks.
The board traced one leak to a Hollis PR contractor.
Grant’s attorneys called it unauthorized.
Maybe.
Madison’s marriage began cracking.
Not because I wanted it to.
Because Grant asked her to sign a personal guarantee after his fund lost the Mercer closing.
She refused.
For the first time, she experienced what pressure attached to money felt like.
She called me.
I did not answer.
My physical recovery continued.
I could lift my toes halfway.
Walk with brace.
Stairs slowly.
Nerve pain came at night like electricity.
Samuel recommended patience.
I told him patience was not treatment.
He said:
“For nerves, unfortunately it often is.”
I hated nerves.
The criminal case against Madison moved forward.
Prosecutors charged felony assault causing significant bodily injury, reckless endangerment, and evidence-related obstruction after investigators found she initially asked a wedding coordinator to describe the chair as “already moving.”
No attempted murder.
No premeditated maiming.
The video showed intent to pull.
Not intent to cause nerve damage.
Madison rejected a plea requiring felony conviction.
Trial scheduled.
Evelyn faced separate potential charges for fraud and falsification.
Grant’s conduct remained under financial investigation.
No one went to prison because a family wanted satisfying symmetry.
