Chapter 19 - MADISON COMES HOME

Madison completed the custodial part of her sentence.

She entered supervised release.

Her marriage to Grant was over.

Her Mercer role was gone.

She retained economic trust income but no executive position until any future independent hiring process.

She moved into a small luxury apartment.

Small by Mercer standards.

Enormous by normal ones.

She requested contact.

I refused.

Then six months later, agreed to one therapist-mediated meeting.

She looked different.

Shorter hair.

No ring.

“Hi.”

“Hi.”

“I’m not going to ask if your foot is better.”

“Good.”

“I already know from public filings.”

I laughed despite myself.

Of course Mercer disability insurance disclosures existed.

She apologized again.

Not:

I didn’t mean—

This time:

“I wanted people to laugh at you.”

Yes.

“I wanted you lower than me for one minute.”

Yes.

“I used my hands to make that happen.”

Yes.

“I did not mean nerve damage. That does not make the choice safe.”

I looked at her.

“Therapy wrote that sentence?”

“Mostly.”

Fair.

Then she said:

“Mom made me think you were taking what I earned.”

“Did you believe her?”

“Yes.”

“Do you now?”

“Partly.”

I appreciated honesty.

“I did work inside Mercer for years.”

“Yes.”

“You didn’t.”

“Yes.”

“And Dad gave you veto power.”

“Yes.”

“That still hurts.”

“I understand.”

“But hurting did not give me the chair.”

There.

Not every grievance had to disappear for accountability to exist.

We met again months later.

Then coffee.

No sisterhood restored overnight.

A new relationship.

May you like

Smaller.

Safer.
