Emily eventually met Frank again.

She was ten.

Therapeutic setting.

He said:

“I’m your grandfather.”

Emily frowned.

“You’re Frank.”

He swallowed.

“Yes.”

“You can be Frank first.”

I almost laughed when Claire told me.

Titles had become something Emily refused to distribute automatically.

Good.

Frank apologized.

Not:

I was protecting your mother.

Not:

I made a mistake.

He said:

“I kept letters meant for you because I wanted control over what happened. Later, I also did it because money and my business were involved.”

Emily asked:

“Did you think I was bad?”

“No.”

“Did you think my parents were bad?”

“No.”

“Then why didn’t you let us decide?”

Frank cried.

“I thought I knew better.”

Emily looked at the therapist.
