Chapter 9 - THE NINE LOST MINUTES
Medical experts reconstructed Amelia’s injuries.
The fall caused catastrophic trauma. Survival was unlikely even with immediate care.
Unlikely was not impossible.
The prosecution separated two questions:
Did Victoria cause the fall?
Did she intentionally delay aid afterward?
The first depended on Sophia’s account, drug evidence, footage, motive, and Victoria’s lies.
The second depended on radio logs, Paula, Dr. Shaw’s payment, and emergency-call timing.
Dr. Shaw’s memory fluctuated.
In one recorded session, he said Victoria told him Amelia “had ruined enough lives.”
He remembered checking a pulse.
He remembered wanting an ambulance.
Then he became confused and believed Amelia was still alive.
His testimony would require medical caution.
The foundation accountant produced a ledger showing Victoria authorized the V.S. Medical payment herself.
The board removed her from Sterling Hotels and froze her voting shares.
She responded by filing bankruptcy petitions for two hotel subsidiaries and ordering the sale of the Sterling Grand through documents signed weeks earlier.
If the sale closed, employee pensions and evidence archives could move beyond local control.
The buyer was a company managed by Victoria’s longtime attorney.
The board obtained an emergency injunction.
Victoria’s control narrowed.
Her danger increased.
She requested a private meeting with me.
I refused.
She sent a letter through counsel instead.
Amelia was unstable. Sophia’s memory has been poisoned by grief. If you continue, the hotel collapses and thousands blame you.
Beneath the typed text, Victoria added one handwritten sentence:
Ask Sophia why she was hiding behind the cart before Amelia fell.
I showed the letter to the child therapist.
Sophia eventually explained.
Victoria had locked her in a service pantry earlier that evening. Amelia found and freed her.
Sophia hid because Victoria threatened to send her father photographs proving she was “a disobedient little thief.”
The photographs showed Sophia taking food from a dessert tray.
Victoria had used hunger and shame before Amelia died.
The method continued after.
Then Reed recovered the pantry key log.
Victoria opened it at 10:28.
Amelia opened it at 10:37.
The stairwell confrontation began minutes later.
Every piece now formed a testable sequence.
What remained was proving whether Victoria’s hands caused the fatal fall beyond reasonable doubt.
The answer waited in the damaged video Gene Turner had kept.
