Chapter 8 - THE DELETED CAMERA
Gene Turner was located in Portugal.
He refused voluntary return but agreed to a remote interview through counsel after prosecutors threatened financial charges.
There had been a camera above the service-stair entrance.
It did not show the stairs themselves.
It showed who entered and left.
The footage captured Amelia entering with Sophia.
Victoria followed carrying a blue medicine bottle.
Only Victoria left before emergency staff arrived.
Turner deleted the recording under Victoria’s instruction.
He preserved one compressed copy as insurance.
The copy was damaged but recoverable.
It showed Victoria gripping Amelia’s arm and pushing her through the stairwell door.
That was not proof she pushed her down the stairs.
It proved physical conflict and another lie.
Victoria’s legal team claimed Amelia, drugged and emotional, pulled away and fell accidentally.
The clonazepam could have entered her drink without Victoria’s knowledge, they argued.
Then investigators recovered Amelia’s shattered phone from hotel evidence.
A draft note stored locally said:
Victoria knows I found the foundation accounts. She threatened to have Alexander declared unfit and keep Sophia. She says the hotel belongs to her even if she has to bury all of us beneath it.
The language was dramatic.
The financial records made it credible.
Family court expanded my visits but did not return Sophia yet.
The evaluator found I had ignored warning signs for months and used work to avoid parenting after Amelia’s death.
I did not challenge that.
I completed parenting therapy, moved permanently back to the city, and resigned from all overseas assignments.
During a supervised visit, Sophia drew the staircase.
She placed Amelia near the top, Victoria behind her, and herself beside a service cart.
In Victoria’s hand she drew a blue bottle.
“What happened next?” the forensic interviewer asked later.
Sophia said, “Grandma pulled Mommy’s hair. Mommy tried to leave. Grandma pushed with both hands.”
It was the clearest account yet.
Then she added something no one expected.
“Uncle Warren told Grandma she was still breathing.”
