Chapter 7 - THE MAN WHO CLEANED THE STAIRS
V.S. Medical belonged to Dr. Warren Shaw, the hotel physician who reviewed Amelia’s toxicology.
His dementia diagnosis was genuine but early.
Investigators found financial records showing Victoria paid him 250,000 dollars through the foundation after Amelia died.
His former nurse, Paula Grant, agreed to speak.
Victoria called Shaw to the hotel before emergency services arrived.
Paula accompanied him.
When they reached the service staircase, Sophia was kneeling beside Amelia.
Victoria pulled the child away.
“Was Amelia alive?” Alvarez asked.
Paula hesitated.
“She had a weak pulse.”
The official report said she was dead when found.
“Why didn’t Dr. Shaw begin resuscitation?”
“Victoria said Amelia had a do-not-resuscitate order.”
No such order existed.
Paula tried to call emergency services. Victoria told hotel security it had already been done.
The first emergency call was placed nine minutes later.
Those minutes might or might not have changed the outcome. Medical experts could not promise.
They proved deliberate delay.
Paula also saw a small blue bottle near the top stair.
Victoria picked it up.
The bottle disappeared.
Victoria’s attorney attacked Paula’s eleven-month delay and her acceptance of a five-thousand-dollar “retention bonus” after the death.
Paula admitted she stayed silent to protect her job.
Her testimony needed support.
Reed found it in an archived emergency-radio recording.
A security officer said:
Mrs. Sterling says hold medical response until Dr. Shaw clears the scene.
The officer later died of natural causes.
His recorded words remained.
Then Rosa, the threatened banquet server, returned with counsel.
She had preserved a voicemail Amelia sent moments before the argument.
“Rosa, if anything happens, get Sophia away from Victoria.”
The message ended with a door opening.
Victoria’s voice said:
“You should have taken the money.”
The rest was muffled.
The final seconds contained a child screaming and a heavy impact.
Still, no recording captured the push itself.
Then the independent auditor found a payment to Gene Turner, the retired security director.
