Chapter 6 - THE FOUNDATION ACCOUNT
Amelia’s policy paid four million dollars.
Victoria used part of it to cover hotel debt and transferred the rest into foundation investments.
The beneficiary-change form carried Amelia’s electronic signature.
Device records showed it was completed from Victoria’s office while Amelia attended a school event across town.
The signature was likely unauthorized.
Victoria claimed Amelia had approved it verbally.
My mother’s motive was no longer limited to control over Sophia.
Amelia had discovered that Victoria used charitable funds to hide hotel losses and personal spending.
A draft email recovered from Amelia’s cloud account read:
Alexander, I found payments that could destroy the company. I am taking Sophia to my sister until you come home. Do not warn your mother.
The email was never sent.
I had been in Singapore that week and ignored two missed calls from Amelia because I was presenting to investors.
That truth followed me everywhere.
Detective Alvarez traced the fake care company’s invoices to the same foundation accountant who processed Amelia’s insurance money.
He agreed to cooperate.
Before his formal interview, Victoria’s lawyers reported him for embezzlement and produced transfers into his personal account.
He had stolen too.
A compromised witness could still tell the truth, but every claim required independent proof.
Hotel employees began protesting unpaid bonuses while the board froze family accounts.
I was blamed publicly for destabilizing the company.
I nearly released all of Victoria’s financial records to the press.
My attorney stopped me.
“Employees deserve facts, not another Sterling using private records as a weapon.”
Instead, the board appointed an independent auditor.
The auditor found eleven million dollars moved through the foundation over five years.
Amelia had printed part of the ledger the night she died.
One page survived inside her coat pocket.
At the bottom she had circled a payment labeled:
May you like
V.S. MEDICAL — PRIVATE STAIR RESPONSE.
The payment was dated three hours after her death.
