Chapter 4 - AMELIA’S LAST NIGHT

The official report said Amelia left Victoria’s private dining room at 10:42 p.m.
At 11:06, a waiter found her at the bottom of the service staircase.
She had a broken neck and a sedative concentration in her blood consistent with her prescription.
No camera covered the stairwell.
Victoria said Amelia had been drinking and appeared unsteady.
The report listed Sophia as asleep in the family suite.
Hotel key records contradicted that.
Sophia’s child key opened the service corridor at 10:51.
Victoria’s master key opened the same door two minutes later.
The records had never been included in the original police file because hotel security supplied only guest-floor access logs.
Reed had not been security director then. His predecessor retired days after Amelia’s death and now lived abroad.
A banquet server named Rosa Kim remembered hearing Victoria and Amelia arguing.
“She said something about taking Sophia away,” Rosa told Alvarez.
“Who did?”
“Mrs. Amelia.”
“What was Victoria’s response?”
Rosa looked toward the camera recording her interview.
“I don’t remember.”
That night, someone left a dead rat outside Rosa’s apartment with a hotel key tied around its neck.
She withdrew her statement.
Victoria petitioned family court for temporary custody, claiming my public assault and emotional instability made Sophia unsafe with me.
The ballroom video began after my slap.
It showed Victoria on the floor and me shouting.
I accepted that my action had consequences.
The judge ordered Sophia to remain in protected foster placement temporarily while both households were assessed.
She screamed when they took her from my hospital room.
“You’re leaving again!”
I promised I would not.
Promises had already failed her.

As she was carried away, Sophia shouted one sentence:
“Mom didn’t drink from the glass. Grandma made her drink from the blue bottle.”
