Chapter 23 - EMILY COMES HOME

At seventy-eight, I asked Emily whether she wanted an apartment in the renovated property.

Not the whole house.

A two-bedroom unit in the east wing.

She had lived independently for years.

No Ryan.

No debt.

North Coast reviewed her restored occupancy eligibility.

Approved.

She moved in.

Not because she inherited.

Because the trust permitted family residence under conditions.

She paid carrying costs based on income.

Ava, now twenty-three, said:

“So Mom finally got Grandma’s house?”

“No,” Emily answered before I could.

“I got an apartment in a trust-owned building.”

Growth.

Noah applauded.

We had Christmas dinner there.

Round table.

Potluck.

I made ham.

Emily made terrible potatoes.

No violence.

No hierarchy.

No one drank from my glass because I stopped having a designated glass.

Small reforms.
