Chapter 18 - LINDA RETURNS CHARLES’S LETTERS

Linda contacted Rebecca two years later.
She had found Charles’s old papers.
Wanted me to have copies.
I agreed to receive them.
No meeting.
The letters changed my understanding.
Charles had not died believing Frank cheated him.
At least not entirely.
One letter:
Frank paid every dollar legally owed. I’m still angry because the land became valuable after I let it go.
There.
Regret.
Not theft.
Another:
Linda keeps saying the Reeves family knew. Maybe they did. Doesn’t matter. I signed.
Linda had inherited a grievance her husband himself had begun releasing.
Why?
Because resentment offered identity.
The Caldwells lost something.
The Reeveses gained.
Simple.
Reality was less satisfying.
Charles made a bad loan.
Received repayment.
Missed appreciation.
That is not theft.
I sent Linda a copy.
No note.
She wrote back:
I never saw this.
Maybe true.
Maybe she had.
I chose not to litigate memory.
She entered therapy? Perhaps not necessary.
She eventually sold her condominium and moved near a sister in North Carolina.

Not Meadowbrook.
