Arthur had never created merit accounts.

Robert gradually turned an accounting aid into a social ranking system.
But the trust company did not necessarily see every private column.
The spreadsheets Robert submitted were simplified.
He reclassified expenses before sending them.
That was more serious.
Why?
The official advancement schedule affected how retained trust distributions were balanced between branches.
If Robert labeled something a branch-specific advancement, Heritage National could reduce future discretionary distributions to that branch.
He had discretion only to report underlying facts.
Not invent them.
The audit found dozens of entries where no actual payment to my household could yet be located.
Helen’s LLC received money.
Silas-linked entities received money.
General family events were charged disproportionately to my branch.
Clara’s parallel expenses were often forgiven or moved to company accounts.
The pattern was undeniable.
Still, the total legal harm required tracing.
Then Arthur’s letter emerged.
Not hidden in the horse.
Not magical.

Do not turn this trust into a scoreboard.
If one child works for Everwood and another becomes a teacher, builder, nurse, or nobody important at all, their human value has not changed.

Because a negative balance made tomorrow’s waiver easier.
If I believed my branch owed nearly two million, I might sign a recapitalization releasing claims in exchange for Robert “forgiving” the balance.
Maya found the draft side letter.
Upon execution of waiver, family adviser recommends elimination of Bennett branch negative advancement balance.
There it was.
Debt forgiveness as leverage.
A debt largely built from fictional or reclassified support.
Tomorrow was meant to feel like rescue.

Clara’s children keep benefits.
Silas gets paid.
Josephine’s branch loses the ability to challenge years of accounting.
But one piece still did not fit.
Why the archive horse?
Why specifically A-001?
Robert could have humiliated Josephine with any broken toy.
Grace found a note in Anna’s files:
A-001 / base token links to C-17 revision history. Robert knows.
Anna had discovered something in the archive.
The missing 2009 folder.
The first year of the merit system.
If that folder showed intentional reclassification, the difference between sloppy favoritism and deliberate fraud could become clear.
The brass token Robert removed from the horse was only an archive cross-reference.
But he thought destroying the link might slow anyone following Anna’s trail.
He chose the horse because he wanted it out of the archive.
Humiliating Josephine was a bonus.
That was what Grace suspected.
We still needed the folder.
Then police examining Robert’s Christmas-night movements found security footage.
After I left, before officers entered the room, Robert carried a thin gray folder upstairs.
