Chapter 12 - HELEN’S COMPANY

Helen cooperated before criminal charges were filed against her.

Family Administration Services had billed $2.7 million across descendant accounts over eleven years.

Not all improper.

Real bookkeeping.

Travel coordination.

Caregiving.

Tax support.

Estate logistics.

But at least $730,000 lacked adequate support.

My branch absorbed the largest share.

Helen admitted Robert encouraged aggressive billing.

“Why did you agree?”

“He said Arthur expected descendants to pay their own way.”

“Did Arthur?”

“No.”

“Did you know?”

She cried.

“Not at first.”

“And later?”

“Yes.”

Specific.

She admitted knowing Clara’s charges were treated more generously.

Why?

“Robert said Clara earned it.”

There.

The merit system in ordinary language.

Helen entered a civil settlement with Heritage National.

She repaid unsupported fees.

Surrendered family-administration authority.

The LLC dissolved.

Prosecutors eventually charged her with limited false-record offenses, not the broader fraud counts Robert faced.

She pleaded.

Probation.

Home confinement.

Restitution.

Permanent fiduciary restriction.

Some relatives called it too light.

I did not.

Her role was real.

Smaller.

Josephine saw Helen again two years later only after asking.

Helen brought no gift.

Good.

She said:

“I let Grandpa turn helping into a bill.”

Josephine was six.

“What does that mean?”

Helen thought.

“I acted like people owed us because we did things families should sometimes do because they care.”

Josephine considered.

“Like making soup?”

“Yes.”

“Soup shouldn’t cost a million dollars.”

I laughed before I could stop myself.

Helen did too.

Then cried.

May you like

No hug came automatically.

Josephine decided that too.
