Chapter 23 - EMMA VALE WITHOUT THE FAMILY STORY

My design firm grew.
Not because the scandal made me famous.
I turned down every television project that wanted:
THE FOUNTAIN WIFE REDESIGNS HER LIFE.
No.
I designed hotels.
Restaurants.
Healthcare spaces.
Homes.
Work.
One magazine asked whether falling into Bellmere’s fountain inspired my later preference for indoor water features with rounded stone edges.
I declined the interview.
Not every aesthetic decision is trauma.
At forty, I opened a second studio.
Alexander attended quietly.
No Vale Heritage contract.
No family-board favoritism.
We kept that boundary.
My marriage became ordinary in the best way.
Bills.
Arguments over vacations.
Alexander leaving coffee cups everywhere.
Lily rolling her eyes at both of us.
He eventually returned to board work—not Vale Heritage.
An independent logistics company.
Later, Vale Heritage offered him one advisory seat.
He accepted only after conflict review.
No trust authority.
No chairmanship.
He read every page.
I teased him:
“Trauma-informed paperwork.”
He said:
May you like
“Shut up.”
Healthy.
