Chapter 19 - CHLOE’S FIRST MEETING WITH LILY

Lily was eleven when she asked about Chloe.

Not because Chloe pushed us.

She hadn’t.

Because she remembered:

the dress.

The yelling.

Cheap trash.

“Does Aunt Chloe still hate me?”

“No.”

“You know?”

“She has written several letters saying she is sorry.”

“Why haven’t I seen?”

“You were younger.”

“Can I?”

We reviewed one with Maya.

Chloe wrote:

I blamed you for wine you did not spill because I was angry my wedding was imperfect.

Then:

I watched my father hurt your mother and still thought about my dress first.

Then:

Ethan’s words were cruel. Mine were too. Neither of you was trash. I was behaving like status mattered more than safety.

Good.

No request for forgiveness.

Lily wanted a meeting.

Public place.

Short.

Alexander and I nearby.

First question:

“Did you know I didn’t spill it?”

Chloe cried immediately.

“Yes.”

“Why say I did?”

“I wanted someone to blame.”

“Did you laugh when Grandpa pushed?”

“No.”

Video confirmed she did not laugh.

“Did you stop him?”

“No.”

“Why?”

“I was still thinking about myself.”

Lily nodded.

That answer made sense to her.

Then:

“Is your dress okay?”

Chloe laughed through tears.

“No. I cut the stained part off when I shortened it.”

Lily smiled.

“Good.”

Meeting lasted thirty minutes.

They did not hug.

Later, birthday cards.

Eventually lunches.

May you like

Relationship.

Not erasure.
