Chapter 17 - LILY LEARNS WATER AGAIN

At five, Lily still disliked fountains.

Pools were easier.

Interesting.

Maya explained:

“Trauma attaches to details, not categories.”

Bellmere fountain:

formal clothes,

loud adults,

stone edge,

being held,

cold shock.

A sunny pool with me beside her was different.

We let her choose.

First swimming lesson:

she sat on the step.

Second:

kicked water.

Third:

floated holding the instructor’s hands.

No dramatic breakthrough.

No applause.

At six she jumped in herself.

I cried.

Quietly.

Alexander pretended not to notice.

Good husband.

At seven Lily asked:

“Did Grandpa push you because I spilled wine?”

“No.”

“You told me I didn’t.”

“You didn’t.”

“Then why?”

“He was angry and chose to hurt me.”

“Because Aunt Chloe?”

“Partly because of the argument. Mostly because he believed anger gave him permission.”

She thought.

“Did money make him?”

“No.”

Important.

“Money made some adults afraid of losing control. It didn’t make Grandpa push.”

She nodded.

Then:

“Do we still own wedding house?”

“No.”

“Who does?”

“A company.”

“Good.”

Why good?

“Too many weddings.”

I laughed.

She remembered almost nothing about Chloe’s ceremony.

Good.
