Chapter 21 - KRISTIN RETURNS TO THE SHED

The shed remained evidence for years.

The property itself entered trust review.

Eventually police released the structure.

I wanted demolition.

Kristin said no.

Then yes.

Then no.

Finally:

“I want to see it.”

We went with her therapist.

The hidden wall was gone.

Police had removed cabinets.

Main door stood open.

No padlock.

Kristin remained outside for ten minutes.

Then walked in.

I followed only when she looked back.

The floor had been cleaned.

Still stained.

She touched nothing.

At the corner where she had collected rainwater, she stopped.

“I thought Anna was going to die here.”

I closed my eyes.

She continued.

“And I thought you’d believe I left.”

“I almost did.”

She looked at me.

“Yes.”

No comforting lie.

We stayed seven minutes.

Then left.

The shed was demolished a month later.

Not because destruction healed her.

Because the building was rotten and unnecessary.

The slab remained for a while.

Then we built nothing over it.

May you like

Grass grew.

Ordinary.
