Chapter 19 - ANNA

Anna Ruth Minton was born at thirty-nine weeks.

Healthy.

Seven pounds, two ounces.

Kristin chose a hospital room with windows.

She asked nurses not to close the bathroom door fully.

No one mocked it.

Labor lasted fourteen hours.

I stood where she told me.

Not where I thought a husband should.

At one point she snapped:

“Stop touching my back.”

I stopped.

No hurt feelings.

Consent can change between contractions.

When Anna arrived, Kristin held her first.

Then me.

I looked down.

She had dark hair.

Tiny furious mouth.

Nothing about her birth changed a trust.

No company vote.

No property deadline.

We had rewritten nothing around her existence.

Good.

Her middle name honored Ruth.

Her life did not owe Ruth continuation.
