Chapter 18 - LINDA RETURNS TO A TABLE

Lily was thirteen when she agreed to meet Linda.
Neutral restaurant.
Therapist nearby.
Thirty minutes.
Linda looked older.
She did not reach for Lily.
“Hi.”
“Hi.”
Lily asked immediately:
“Why did you clean the room?”
Linda swallowed.
“Because Grandpa told me the company could be destroyed if your dad found what you found.”
“Did you believe him?”
“Yes.”
“Did you know I got hit?”
“Yes.”
“Then why company?”
Linda started crying.
Lily waited.
No rescue.
Finally Linda said:
“Because I had spent so long obeying your grandfather that I treated his fear like an emergency and your fear like an inconvenience.”
Lily nodded slowly.
“That’s bad.”
“Yes.”
“Did you love me?”
“Yes.”
“Then love didn’t help.”
“No.”
The meeting ended after twenty-two minutes.
Lily agreed to receive birthday cards.
No unsupervised visits.
No financial authority.
