Chapter 11 - REBECCA REED ON TRIAL

Rebecca’s trial began with the injuries.

Not the money.

The prosecutor refused to bury a child assault beneath corporate paperwork.

Lily’s forensic interview played under protective procedures.

Her small voice filled the courtroom.

“Aunt Rebecca hit my face.”

“Why?”

“She wanted Mommy’s paper.”

“What was Grandpa doing?”

“Holding me.”

Medical photographs followed.

The cheek bruise.

The arm marks.

No sensational close-ups.

No pretending Lily was more seriously injured than she was.

The prosecution introduced only enough trust evidence to establish motive.

The yellow envelope.

Rebecca’s messages.

The dormant voting block.

The BlueRiver audit.

The defense argued Lily had been upset and confused.

They suggested Rebecca accidentally struck her while grabbing the envelope.

Then the recovered hallway audio appeared.

A guest’s phone had recorded from inside a coat pocket.

Muffled.

Rebecca:

Give it to me.

Lily:

No!

Robert:

Lily, stop fighting.

Rebecca:

Where did you put the drive?

Then a sharp sound.

Lily crying.

Rebecca:

Look what you made me do.

That phrase destroyed the accident theory.

Rebecca testified.

She admitted grabbing the envelope.

Admitted searching Lily’s cardigan.

Admitted knowing the packet could stop Meridian.

Denied intentionally slapping her.

The jury convicted Rebecca of assault of a child, unlawful restraint in concert, evidence tampering, and conspiracy relating to trust obstruction.

She was acquitted of a more serious aggravated assault count because Lily’s physical injuries did not meet that statutory threshold.

Precision mattered.

At sentencing, I spoke once.

“My sister’s financial fear became permission to put her hand on my daughter.”

Rebecca received a substantial custodial sentence, restitution, and permanent fiduciary disqualification.

No contact with Lily absent future court approval.

My sister cried.

I did not feel victory.

Lily still asked me to check behind the washing machine before bed.
