Chapter 17 - REBECCA’S LETTER
Rebecca wrote from prison when Lily was nine.
The letter came through attorneys.
Lily chose not to read it.
At twelve, she did.
Rebecca wrote:
I told myself I was protecting the company because I believed Grace had put too much power into a child’s trust.
Lily stopped.
“She means me.”
“Yes.”
“She thought I had power at four?”
“She knew trustees would have it for you.”
“That’s different.”
“Yes.”
Rebecca continued.
She admitted she had been afraid the audit would expose BlueRiver.
Admitted seeing the yellow envelope.
Admitted grabbing Lily.
Admitted hitting her.
Then:
I said you made me do it. That was a lie. I made myself do it because I was afraid.
Lily read that sentence twice.
“Is she sorry?”
“I think so.”
“Do I have to answer?”
“No.”
She did not.
She stored the letter.

Truth could be accepted without relationship.
