Chapter 6 - Jocelyn’s Story
Jocelyn denied trying to get rid of Emmett.
Her attorney’s first letter called the accusation inflammatory.
Her version:
Declan and Jocelyn had repeatedly discussed needing help.
True.
We had.
I once said:
“Maybe Emmett should spend more summers with Ruth and Alan.”
True.
I had.
She interpreted that as openness to a school-term stay.
Did I ever say school year?
No.
Then:
Jocelyn contacted Ruth to “explore.”
Why impersonate me?
She said she did not.
The fake domain, she claimed, was a shared household email created for family correspondence.
I had never seen it.
Who registered?
Records later.
Not yet.
The copied signature?
She claimed I had authorized her to e-sign household documents generally.
Sometimes true.
Contractor approvals.
Camp forms.
Never transfer-of-care authorization.
School withdrawal?
She said she believed we had reached decision.
Why not tell me?
“We were barely speaking.”
True.
Marriage had been bad.
Then the nights outside.
She called them:
“cool-down periods.”
One porch night became an accidental sleep.
Her story:
Emmett refused to come back inside.
Maribel’s story:
Jocelyn locked the deadbolt.
Could doorbell records show?
Smart lock logs.
Yes.
One night:
Door locked 8:14 p.m.
Unlocked 10:48 p.m.
Emmett’s bedroom camera? None.
Maribel left at 7.
Who was outside?
We had porch motion camera.
Cloud footage had been deleted after seven days normally.
One retained clip because motion alert saved? Our security subscription kept 30 days.
Good.
Video:
8:19 p.m.
Emmett curled beneath blanket on porch chair.
Jocelyn opens door.
“You ready to apologize?”
Audio.
Emmett:
“I want Daddy.”
Jocelyn:
“Daddy is working because you make everything harder when he’s home.”
My stomach turned.
Then:
“Say you’re sorry.”
“I’m sorry.”
“For?”
“I don’t know.”
She closes door.
At 9:02, he is still outside.
At 9:16, Jocelyn brings water.
Important.
She was not trying to physically endanger him through thirst.
At 10:47, she lets him in.
Two and a half hours.
Summer night.
No rain.
Still punitive exclusion.
Then another clip two weeks later:
Emmett on front step for thirty-one minutes.
No sleeping.
The garage had no camera.
Maribel’s testimony.
Then the push I witnessed.
Jocelyn said she guided him outside.
Video from doorbell showed a forceful push.
Not enough to injure.
Enough.
Then her defense pivoted:
Declan struck Jocelyn.
True.
Declan works excessively.
True.
Declan delegated parenting.
True.
Jocelyn had been carrying more emotional labor.
Maybe true.
None authorized exclusion.
But the case would not allow me to become a perfect father just because she became unsafe.
