Chapter 19 - Trial: The Porch

The prosecution began with doorbell video.

Not forged emails.

The child.

8:19 p.m.

Emmett under blanket.

Jocelyn:

“You ready to apologize?”

His small voice:

“I want Daddy.”

Her answer:

“Daddy is working because you make everything harder when he’s home.”

The courtroom went silent.

Defense did not pretend it looked good.

They emphasized:

Warm weather.

Covered porch.

Water delivered.

Two and a half hours.

No physical injury.

Then garage.

No video.

Maribel.

She testified:

Found bedding.

Saw Emmett there.

Jocelyn said Declan approved.

Why did Maribel not report?

Fear of job.

Defense attacked credibility.

“You stayed employed.”

“Yes.”

“You accepted wages.”

“Yes.”

“You only reported after Declan caught Jocelyn.”

“Yes.”

“So you protected yourself until convenient.”

Maribel looked down.

“Yes.”

That honesty helped.

Then:

“Did you ever see Jocelyn leave Emmett outside overnight until morning?”

“No.”

“Any winter exposure?”

“No.”

“Any injury?”

“No.”

Good.

No exaggeration.

Then the push I witnessed.

Doorbell clip.

Jocelyn guiding—forcefully shoving—Emmett out.

My slap.

All shown.

No sanitized father.

The jury saw me hit her.

Defense would use.

Fine.
