Chapter 14 - Maribel’s Decision
Maribel offered to resign.
I said:
“Why?”
“I failed him.”
“You delayed.”
“Yes.”
“Do you want to leave?”
“No.”
“Then don’t resign to make yourself feel punished.”
She looked surprised.
We changed her role.
Not nanny.
Housekeeping.
If she witnessed child-safety concern:
Call me.
If unreachable and danger:
Emergency services/CPS as appropriate.
No accepting “Declan knows” for serious discipline.
She said:
“That sounds obvious now.”
“Most boundaries do after they’re crossed.”
She stayed six more months.
Then left for a facilities-management position with benefits.
Good.
No lifetime servant loyalty.
Before leaving, she gave Emmett a new pillow.
He said:
“I have one.”
She laughed.
“Okay. Then this is for couch.”
He accepted.
No symbolism forced.
Maribel apologized to him:
“I should have told your dad sooner.”
Emmett asked:
“Why?”
“I was scared.”
“Of Jocelyn?”
“Of losing my job.”
He thought.
“Jobs scary?”
“Sometimes.”
Then:
“You call next time?”
“Yes.”
He nodded.
Children sometimes accept accountability more cleanly than adults because they have less interest in preserving our self-image.
Maribel later testified.
