Chapter 5 - CLAUDIA’S WEDDING WAS ALSO A BOARDROOM
Claudia’s wedding had one hundred seventy-eight guests.
Forty-one were members of Belladonna.
Nine had some business relationship to the club.
Four were trustees, advisers, or family shareholders.
That did not make the reception a corporate meeting.
But Vera used it like one.
The afternoon before the ceremony, she hosted a “family luncheon.”
I was not invited.
Why?
Claudia said:
“Women only.”
Not true.
Two male cousins attended.
Julian obtained the guest list later through ordinary discovery after the trust dispute began.
The luncheon agenda was handwritten.
No official minutes.
Topics:
Wedding logistics.
Club refinancing.
Claudia’s future role.
“Amelia line.”
My stomach tightened when I read it.
One guest remembered Vera saying:
“Celeste’s branch ends with a child who belongs to Rafael’s world.”
There.
Not literal family termination.
Social exclusion.
Another remembered:
“Claudia should control Belladonna because she lives the family.”
What did that mean?
Claudia chaired charity dinners.
Hosted members.
Knew vendors.
Amelia was eight.
Of course she did not “live the family” in an adult institutional sense.
Vera compared a child to a thirty-four-year-old woman and called the comparison destiny.
Then the proposed trust cash-out.
At the luncheon, Vera described it as:
“protecting Amelia from a failing asset.”
Interesting.
If Belladonna was failing, why insist Claudia control it?
Because Vera believed the real estate would recover once debt was restructured.
She wanted Claudia to keep upside.
Amelia to take fixed cash.
That was the direction.
But perhaps still legitimate if fair value and proper approval existed.
The problem was the value.
The problem was disclosure.
The problem was Vera’s conflict.
Then the acquisition.
Vera apparently knew the lender had been negotiating with an unidentified buyer.
She did not know it was me.
She assumed a hotel fund.
Why did she proceed with the wedding anyway?
Because she believed she could refinance after the reception through a family lender.
That financing depended on Claudia receiving consolidated trust voting authority.
And that depended partly on reducing Amelia’s competing interest.
Now the wedding had a second purpose.
Celebrate Claudia.
Then announce:
Claudia as Belladonna’s future steward.
The head table mattered symbolically.
Amelia’s chair mattered symbolically.
When Vera shoved her away, she was not executing a legal document.
But she was acting out a hierarchy she intended to formalize.
That distinction mattered.
